The Goodburger’s Meatless Burgers are real good shit

Burgers are possibly one of the most beloved food items out there —  unless you are vegan. But gone were the days of switching out meat for portobello. Welcome to the 21st century where trailblazers like The Goodburger grill up succulent plant-based alternative patties in Singapore.

The folks behind Goodburger are rebels who not only take pride in their alternative meat products but also serve it all out of a food truck at Coronation Plaza.

Be warned if you’re prone to perspiring because the alfresco life is not for everyone. It’s a breeze if you enjoy dining in the open though, especially with hordes of pups trodding by regularly.

More Hits Than Misses

Meatless burgers are a relatively young trend so it’s not an exact science yet. Given that, there will be hits and misses even at the best burger grills. However, the good news is that The Goodburger’s food truck churns out more hits than misses.

Should there be a dilemma on which alternative meat to try, I highly recommend chomping on the juicy Tindle patty in their What the Cluck? ($18).

This ersatz chicken patty literally bursts with juices. In a way, it’s almost like an upsized nugget than your regular chicken thigh patty in texture but retaining part of that succulent tenderness.

One of the best plant-based burgers I’ve had in Singapore, especially with the way The Goodburger assembled it using spice-forward seasoning, crunchy pickles, and robustly garlicky sauce.

Whereas The Classic ($16/$22) was a solid Impossible burger but The Goodburger ultimately didn’t manage to escape the trappings of the meatless patty, as some burger joints in Singapore had managed.

That said, subjective sensitivity also plays a role. Whilst I found the distinct soy taste quite apparent, my dining partner thought it wasn’t noticeable. A shared consensus though, was that the texture was juicy and crumbly — a lifelike replica of beef patty texture.

Sauce and condiments greatly help in masking indications of the Impossible Patty’s soy-based genesis though. Maybe that’s why the One Night in Bangkok ($20) is of my favourites of The Goodburger’s Impossible range — it’s hard to find another like it in Singapore.

One caveat is that this creation doesn’t really much taste like a regular burger with its unique flavour profile. Loaded with an abundance of onions and Thai aromatics, this feels weirdly nostalgic, like a plated dish you’d find at a Thai bistro.

Out of the four variations on The Goodburger’s menu, the weakest link was The Black Tie ($18), jazzed up with the Singapore cafe scene’s favourite flavour enhancer, truffle.

Not to say it’s bad but truffle aioli was slightly overwhelming and too sweet, especially in conjunction with the ketchup base. Patty was still well-grilled though and I can’t complain about rocket leaves in burgers.

Can meatless burgers accurately replace juicy beef patties? Not yet. That being said, The Goodburger makes a good case for plant-based burgers in Singapore — they are assembling some good shit out of their food truck. If I was in the mood for some Impossible or Tindle patties, this will definitely be on my list.
