White Shades: Telok Ayer’s bodacious new cocktail bar built on a four-storey concept
A recent foray into Boon Tat Street had my gaze arrested by one particularly swanky new establishment: the modish White Shades.

If mixology is an art, Jigger & Pony can be seen as Singapore’s pre-eminent gallery for fine cocktail arts. This institution is a cornerstone of Singapore bar history — many of today’s top bartenders can be traced back to the storied speciality bar.

All I see is red. Up the barely illuminated staircase beside Revolver and past a gilded sign that demarcated the secret entrance of Barood, the seemingly seedy second-storey lounge was covered floor-to-ceiling in an unending swathe of impassioned crimson.
There’s an image that has been attributed to wine bars over the decades. It’s one that’s stuffy, it’s inaccessible, and it’s opulent. But there’s currently a renewed struggle to escape from that culture as more and more new concepts like Vin Geek are joining in to fight the good fight.

While fish & chips are getting plenty of coverage, only a handful of swanky restaurants indulge in the heartiness of a Sunday roast. Getting in the mood for the festivities, Thirty Sixty Brewlab & Smokehouse are inviting guests to feast over the Christmas weekend with a Sunday roast special on 24 Dec 2022 and 25 Dec 2022.
Witnessing one of your favourite restaurants lower its shutters for the last time is never a good feeling and the abrupt demise of Salted & Hung made me quite demoralised. However, Chef Drew extended an olive branch in this bleak year of closings as he set up a new restaurant, Cenzo, along swanky Club Street.
Spanish food is having its moment in Singapore, as an increasing number of Spanish restaurants started earning dazzling plaudits and ended up on the Michelin radar. There are quite a slew of places for date nights but if you’re looking for piping-hot Paella, no place comes as recommended by other food lovers as Kulto.
