Sometimes, little discernment or foresight is needed to identify the immense potential of a new opening. To those of us living in 2023, Frantzen Group’s latest local outfit, Brasserie Astoria at the Victoria Concert Hall, saunters effortlessly to a podium finish for one of this year’s most anticipated openings in Singapore.
Nothing lasts forever. In a tumultuous Singapore cafe landscape, constant reinvention is imperative in order to halt the taint of obsoletion. Even the most iconic cafes abide by those truths — this includes Elixir Boutique Roasters, a stalwart fixture at Serene Centre since 2019.
It’s an indelible fact that sourdough has generated an incredible amount of buzz in the cafe scene in recent years. Even with the deluge of scrumptious bakes, pastries, and pizzas, I don’t think any other establishment has been able to utilise wild yeast fermentation as holistically in Singapore as the newly opened Anna’s Sourdough.
And thus… Out it came, the last pizza from the oven at Southside Interim Market and 4 AM Pizza ended its first chapter on a high. I stood witness to their last hurrah at the far-flung venue in the southside of Sentosa before its impending transformation, one that will regrettably not involve pizzas or any food.
Watching a fledgling concept blossom into a successful restaurant is always a heartwarming experience for me. Supporting local is more than just a mantra, it’s a conviction in Singapore’s latent talent — and Drunken Farmer is one of the few places that I can proudly say I’ve seen grow from its infancy.
Having been a regular at Yeast Side’s quaint hideout at King Albert Park, it was exciting to step into the spanking new Farrer Park outlet for the first time. This new space is as lively, unpretentious, and inviting — a trademark of the cafe, which also doubles as a craft beer bar.
A misconception that many have is that you can only get good pizzas in a fancy restaurant. Considering its humble origins in the austere Napoli purlieus, that shouldn’t be the status quo. Amidst a wave of swanky artisan pizzerias, it’s refreshing to see Wala Pizza bringing the homely carbs back to its roots, straight out of a home oven. Continue reading “Wala Pizza”
The charisma of a good pizza is undeniable when the dough, the sauce, and the toppings are all done just right. At its core, pizza is a very simple dish. So even with the prevalent movement of artisan pizza joints all over Singapore, I’m more than happy to welcome the unpretentious NY-style pies of Sonny’s Pizza to the fold. I’m not usually one to put restaurants on blast — I’d give constructive feedback and will leave satisfied if they’re receptive. However, Santi’s Pizza was an extreme outlier in that regard and my frustration has to be channelled somewhere.
