There’s an enigmatic restaurant settled right in the corner unit of the junction connecting Carpenter Street and South Bridge Road. One affixed with tall glass panes but also paradoxically enshrouded within pale white drapes, providing little clues besides a sleekly stylised “LUMO” stencil on the windows.
There’s an image that has been attributed to wine bars over the decades. It’s one that’s stuffy, it’s inaccessible, and it’s opulent. But there’s currently a renewed struggle to escape from that culture as more and more new concepts like Vin Geek are joining in to fight the good fight.
Joo Chiat is a street that truly only bursts into life when the sun goes down and the lights turn on. Joining this nocturnal street is an aptly named Supperman Speakeasy & Grill, a grill concept where the common man can let up after a hard day’s work.

As the dreary storm clouds cleared up, frail wisps of golden hour sunlight threaded through the lush green foliage before bouncing onto a clutter of tables sprawled out along the viridescent ground-floor perimeter of a lone Kallang building, where Raw Kitchen Bar operates.
I maintain that the most interesting restaurant set-ups can only be found at the most arbitrary of locales which elude the public with a certain twinge of inaccessibility — after all, real estate is a disproportionately exorbitant luxury in Singapore’s F&B scene. But the community always finds a way to congregate in cosy little alcoves like at Rochester, where Gary’s Restaurant is located.
Luxury has a name and it’s “wagyu”. Synonymous with the best meat quality, Wagyu beef has made a reputation for itself amongst meat lovers. The rockstar of beef deserves a grand stage and that’s what the newly opened Wa-En Wagyu Yakiniku at Jewel Changi is meant to be.
